Let's play a game!
Hi guys!
I was writing the other night and started mulling over the possibilities for Vaun’s backstory. We know so little that they're essentially endless.
And I thought it might be fun to kindof compare ideas as to what aspects of his "before" life might have been like. I'm sure we can each come up with a few ideas.
Whether or not they're fully fleshed out, share ideas here! I'll start:
Soo my initial idea: what if Vaun didn't have someone like Faustus to teach him who he was? What if he stumbled upon a strigoi belonging to the Master early in his life?
The Master is cunning. It knew of the danger Quinlan posed to it. It decides to take Vaun in and essentially corrupt him. Sends him on smaller missions which are dangerous but meant to prepare him for his real task- to kill Q.
So Vaun someday either meets Quinlan and learns who he is, or gets sidetracked by someone else and learns the truth. I'd go with the latter. Betrayed, he cuts off ties with the Master and wanders off.
I kindof want to make a major driving role for V his empathy. He'd act tough on the exterior but bases his moral code largely around the protection of those he deems innocent.
Over the years he learns that humanity isn't all black and white. So-called innocent people sin too. It grates on him. The only real innocent ones are those purest- children. Seeing them hungry and alone reminds him of himself in a way. So, without much else going on in life he eventually decides to take action.
He purchases land and sets to work providing a safe placw for the homeless children wandering the streets. (How there are so many homeless children I'd have to think about...) Maybe he has a few decades of turnover where older ones grow up and new ones come in.
Then one day the Master finds it and just destroys Vaun in the worst way by essentially providing the most painful deaths to those beneath his charge.
Thus, the Master is now Vaun's enemy. He does research and figures out that there are Seven total ancients
Etc, etc

Re: Let's play a game!
I mean I feel like all I really have to go on is the fact that Vaun was sweet to the Luss's kids. Even Gus, who at this Western day and age is right at the transition year of child/adult.
Anybody else have headcanons?

Re: Let's play a game!
I have a few. This one isn't about kids thought. Although I do have some for that.
I always thought of Vaun as being more edge. Than other vampires. Even Quinlan. I kind of thought of him. As an old vampire that kept up with the new changes in technology, society and the like. Looking at Vaun. Than comparing him to Quinlan. Even in his modern like clothes. Quinlan has a vary old world feel to him.
Well one of my headcanons. Is while trying to keep up with modern technology. Vaun is introduced to the first car. He falls in love with this piece of human technology, and becomes a black thumb, or mechanic. As the years go on. He ends up becoming a car collector. Having some pretty sweet rides. That Gus would kill to take ten minute around the block in.
Vaun's investment in to modern tec. Has influence the Ancients to endure such modern things too. Like arming their sun hunters with guns. Using electricity and cars.
Much to Quinlan's disappointment. I thought it would be fun to canon. That although Q use's modern tec and conveniences when necessary. He is still stuck in his old ways of doing things. Unlike Vaun. Whom holds his old would living near and dear, but takes to the modern would like a duck to water.
Imagine Vaun under the hood of one of his sweet rides. Listing to Don't Stop Believing by Journey on his Ipod. Kind of sexy.

You had me at cars and Journey
If I go with his character as depicted in S2, he comes off as not particularly old. I see him as maybe coming from the American past, like gold rush times. He's got a rough and ready aspect, very practical and not formal at all. Just a thought. I like the idea of him being a bad ass gunslinger!

Re: Let's play a game!
I love both your ideas! I can see Vaun as a gunslinger! All wild west. Killing vamps during the day, and spending his money at the saloon at night, and before hand. Working the Oregon Trail to protect the pioneers and The Ancients' investment from Indians and vampire attacks.
I can imagine Vaun as being very active in the new world. He fought in all the wars. From the revolutionary to Iran. He participated in many of Americas most important events. Ether as a loyal American serving his country, or over seeing The Ancients' investments. ( I think that The Ancients left Vaun in charge of most. If not all of their responsibilities. So all the had to do. Is sleep and drink. ) Loyal and skilled, but jaded with disappointment. From how the country he served and helped shape hasn't lived up to his dreams. He lives how for the next mission. When's not under the hood of car.
I like to think that Vaun isn't as old as Quinlan, but I like to think that he and Q are brothers, and are both European born. So The Master had to have made him. Somewhere in Wales. After joining The Ancients. He convinced them to sail to the new world.
I say this, because when The Master left America for Europe. He never went back until. Flight 753.

Nothing- I think Majin is just saying he's partial to Spanish/Latin folks because he had his first experiences in Spain
So many possible time periods..

A knight! I agree with Goeticdisciple when she said. "He's got a rough and ready aspect, very practical."
I always imagine Vaun as being a knight, before he came to America and before he work for the Ancients. That would explain his personality in episode 7.
I can see him leaving homing to travel Europe on crusade as a Templar. This is how the Ancients came to hear about him.

Re: Let's play a game!
Hmm. I know it's generally accepted that Vaun as a Born would be the spawn of Master, but he could always be an Ancient-Born as well.
If he's Ancient born and older than Q I don't see him being alone for very long. Ancients seem quite practical and black-and-white to me; if a Born was made, they'd know about it, and they'd either take it in to ensure their existence remains a secret or they'd dispose of it. I can imagine any strigoi they make eventually being self-aware as well, like Eichorst. They talk about being accepted to carry their worms as some great honor... but I'm trailing off subject.
If the Master sires him it could be in response to the threat that Q possesses. I think the Master would try to maintain strict control so it doesn't make the same mistake again... have the mother destroyed and the child kept under close surveillance.

Re: Let's play a game!
my version of Vaun is an Ancient born, the one played by the uber talented Doug Jones!! it keeps him alive as a game at first, but when it see's Vaun's battle skill later on in life, decides to keep him alive for service to their cause.
the same is said for the other hunters in vaun's group.
also in my story there are many more born, other than the 5 in canon, females included that have served throughout history...and some have hair, some are bald and look like asajj ventress..
think of them like assassin's creed - born edition!

Or make the mother like Eichorst. A loyally subject to The Master.Babywhatsyoursin wrote:Hmm. I know it's generally accepted that Vaun as a Born would be the spawn of Master, but he could always be an Ancient-Born as well.

I thought for awhile. That Vaun could be Ancient born, but he couldn't be older than Q. or that law they put in place. About borns having to be put to death. Would have meant. That The Master wouldn't have tried to kill Quinlan. So many times.
I thought about younger. Quinlan tho seemingly resents what he is. I don't think he would let The Ancients. Take a bash at another one of him. A loyal servant to them or not.
But in response to Quinlan hunting him. Yes he'd try again. To see if he could get the same results

Here's something new. For everyone to chew on. I headcanon that Vaun’s team of daywalkers. Were his loyal band of brother knights. That choose to became vamps in order to stay by his side!

Re: Let's play a game!
Thank you. I have been thinking of headcanon for Vaun so much, but I didn't have a lot for his team. His team seemed so important to him. I theorized that Vaun was once a knight in Wels. Before he went to serve The Ancients. He was going to go alone, but his men. Whom were sworn to fight by his side and were his close friends. Didn't want him to go alone. So each of them choose to become a vampire. So that they could fight by the side of their leader. Till there last moment.
I also am still on the Vaun is a born boat. The reason his men looked so much like he did. In episode 3. Is because of The Ancients altering the warms they put inside them.

I like this idea, esp. the Ancients altering the worms thus causing them to look alike. There's so much room for stories with this concept!

Re: Let's play a game!
I have a new theory about why Vaun and his men look so much alike. The Master wanted to create another born. One that would be stronger than Q. So he infected expecting women. That were earlier in to their pregnancies. Than Q’s mother had been. Hoping that a more vampire like born. Would be more than a match for Q.
The first one. Was born too vampire. Could take orders, but could not convers, and was overly sensitive to sun light. The Master tried again, and again and again! To try and make the perfect born. Until his fifth try. Were he finally succeeded. By Infecting a Wales noble women. That was earlier in her pregnancy than Q’s mother had been, but farther than the others hand been. Human enough to have none of the vampire weakness. Yet more vampire than the eldest of The Master seed. This born was the youngest of all the borns. His name was Vaun!
