Comics:
A melange of made up stuff.
• His swords appear based off samurai katanas but they aren't accurate - handles are too short, blades too long. More of less what someone would think a katana would look like if they were just winging it from memory...
• His tac gear is just a standard MOLLE vest, artist's idea of gloves, BDU pants... again, the artist is really winging it
• The shotgun they show him carrying is a joke and a 10 year old could draw a better one

Can you guys tell I hate the comics?

In the show:
He's wearing a MOLLE vest/plate armor carrier Link here that's been heavily modified. I've looked at dozens online and haven't ever seen a model with the 2 velcro straps on the sides. They've equipped it with what looks to be a modded shotgun pouch across the breast (haven't ever found one quite as long as what he has) and other various MOLLE pouches.

Gloves - hard knuckle (Kevlar) tactical gloves. Similar to these
I have a pair and they are truly the greatest things ever. When you wear them you want to make excuses to punch things.

Pants - most likely Propper BDUs in poly/cotton twill. Not ripstop fabric - you'd be able to see the texture if it was ripstop. Link here

Drop leg bag left leg, drop leg holster right leg

Standard elbow and knee pads. I have G XTAKK Knee & Elbow Pads which I think look cooler because of the sleek shape. Quinlan, you need to upgrade.

Boots - look like motorcross/motorcycle boots with the brand insignias stripped off/modded over. Not combat boots - his are too stylish and the soles are thinner than combat soles. Not SWAT boots - his are too tall. I haven't been able to find exactly what they are.

Hoodie - these must have been custom made. The outer shell must be nylon. It has that sheen and you can hear the swish-swish of the fabric as he's inspecting the kids in Ep 7. All I've been able to find are standard cotton black hoodies with a red contrast lining.

Weapons:
Probably a tactical machete or kukri by the look of the top of the hilt. Link Here

Handgun - can't see it. Would imagine he's got a Glock G37 or a G40 - something big, mean but accurate. He's very strong so the heaviness of the gun wouldn't matter. Or better yet a Sig Sauer P227 Enhanced Elite because it just looks super cool link here

Pump Action Stake Gun - doesn't exist IRL. Looks like it was based off a Planetside QCX Hunter crossbow (gamer weapon) and a Heckler and Koch SL8. If my prop-maker comes through I'll have a full sized version to show you guys in a couple months... won't be functional but will sure look cool!

Sword/shotgun - remains to be seen.

That's a lot of stuff for a man. His purse must be bigger than a woman's.

His purse is attached via velcro over his entire body, LOL - the power of a MOLLE vest!

And everbody - I'm not the expert - I just have simply spent hours Googling this shit while procrastinating at work. If anyone finds a definitive match for gloves, boots, vest, hoodie... PLEASE POST IT

I agree! But that's cause I think he looks wicked triangular in the comics, with little noodle arms.

I get that he's bulky, wearing tactical gear, etc- but make his arms match more!

Ah well... it's the artist's interpretation.

Wonder if the strigoi all get tactical fanny packs or something with crayons so they can doodle to keep them busy on long car rides.

I just have one more question...is he wearing a pouch belt??? because in some shots i can see multiple pouches on his waist....and also why is it his pants are like bunched up at the thighs??? those BDU pants don't look baggy to me....also in one shot at the luss home..i thought he was wearing chaps...

He probably has a couple pouches on his tact belt.

BDUs can be pretty loose, especially on a guy with thinner legs, like McHattie. I think his drop leg holsters add to the bunchy-ness as well. Mine like to twist all around as I walk - probably because they don't have any weight in them to keep them down.

And guys! My prop maker is ready to start on my stake gun. It will have a removable magazine and we are trying to figure out if we can make it rack. I can't wait to show it to all of you!

LOL I want to have time to do the whole makeup again... I did a trial run with a bald cap a couple weeks ago that looked pretty good. Just takes me a long time (with the cap application we're probably up to a good 3+ hours)!

i have a question thats been driving me crazy,i've seen the effect for prince nuada from hellboy and also piccolo from dbz - how do you cover up eyebrows for character with no eyebrows??

You can cover them with a standard glue stick - basically spackling them down until they are smooth. It takes a long time and a lot of patience. You can also do something similar with Spirit gum. I tried both ways multiple times, was unhappy with the results and in a fit of midnight frustration shaved mine mostly off!

They took forever to grow back and learning how to draw them back on took some doing.

But screw it, I'd do it again in a heartbeat because it looked REALLY good with the makeup.

Also, a lot of the SFx makeups you see with no eyebrows is a latex appliance completely covering the brow. The Vaun makeup for show looks to be almost a complete face covering - I think the only real parts of Stephen that we're seeing are his eyes and his bottom lip/chin.

as for stephens appliance,i think its just his lips and eyes..like how del toro had for both luke goss and ron perlman in the hellboy movies....(man i would have fired the makeup artist who did V the second time around)which btw stephen looks to me like he has very fine to almost no eyelashes...even in normal shots of him.

The basic structure of McHattie's face appears quite different to me. The shape of the nose (esp. his nostrils, just can't see it here) appears different. I think the Vaun makeup has a little bit of a Roman nose (which would make sense). Cheekbones look built out. Stephen's normal skin is also quite wrinkly and as Vaun it's smooth and immobile so it's gotta be covered somehow.

They did luck out with the no eyelashes because I have no idea how they would cover those up!

like it looks broken at the bridge - most likely from battle being struck in the face by his opponent during the coliseum fights...also hence his scaring over his (right/left?) eye.

That's possible! Also I'm pretty sure that Romans had pronounced nose, like a hump almost- got it from his momma :p . Probably a bit of both, because I'm sure he's gotten whacked good quite a few times.

One of the things I like most about McHottie's look is that he's beat to hell. It makes my little female caretaker instincts go crazy

I love a worn/scarred look. Plus, who lives hundreds to thousands of years without a scratch anyway?

GDT is all about detail in his monsters.. I'm sure his presense, background or not, is definitely benefitting to character design!!

I'm sure that his face is mostly under prosthetic just like GDT did to Luke for HBII. He also probably applied a yellow wash to his face too since he did that to Luke because it made the skin appear white under the lights. You can see in some scenes in HBII that his face looks weird like Stephens in episode 13.
I have faith we will get episode 7 McHottie when it comes back on but at this point I don't care what version we get, I just want him.

Love the attention to detail about the scars, without knowing his back story you can tell he's seen some shit.
