Rupert Penry-Jones on replacing McHattie

Well now I feel a little bit bad for ol Rupert. He knows we rabid few were going to be very disappointed. Kudos to him for being aware of what he was walking into. Sounds like the physicality of the role was anticipated as being too much for McHattie.

Quinlan is one of [Del Toro's] favorite characters. Did you feel that pressure?
The pressure really comes from the guy who ends up being Vaun, because he was my favorite character on the show and when they told me they were replacing him... they needed someone who was a little more physically able to do the role as well. I have to do lots of sword fighting and jumping around, things like that.
So I was basically taking over from someone I thought was fantastic. To step into his shoes is what the pressure is. As a fan, I’m sort of upset that he’s no longer in the show. I’m nervous about people thinking that he should have stayed as Quinlan. But Guillermo made me feel nothing but confident and comfortable about it. He watched the first few days I was on set filming and was very involved in my look and the makeup. I do feel nervous that people are going to not like him. This Quinlan is very different than the books. I’m a bit more human than the Quinlan in the books. The book people might take a bit of time to get used to it.

Re: Rupert Penry-Jones on replacing McHattie
I don't see why they needed to replace McHattie for that. Him coming in guns a blazing. Like in his introduction scene. Was awesome. A stunt double could have been brought in. To do all the overly strenuous stuff.
What really gets my goat. Is that they only thought about the Physical strain it could put on Mchattie. After they bought him in to the show.
I love Rupert. He is a truly fan. Although I haven't falling in love with the new Q. I love the guy for trying to fell those big show. Left behind by McHattie. He's trying his best. I respect him for that.

Re: Rupert Penry-Jones on replacing McHattie
I respect Rupert for knowing what big shoes he has to fill with mchattie's departure...but what bugs me is how disrespectful he was to the ancients in comparison to the books...i know it was for comedic effect and all but really makes him look like an overconfident douche...
and him training vaun....i still can't wrap my head around this...like i still imagine vaun and the boys learning on their own....in their own turf's then coming together and forming their team centuries later when the ancients came calling.

I agree with you on this one Majinkura. Q was too condescending. He honestly reminds me a little bit of Bolivar. I guess that's suppose to mean something. This can't be the guy. That's going to travel the would. Loyally collecting The Ancient's ashes. In urns made of white oak.
If Q trained Vaun and the team to be better then him. What dose that say about his skill.
I'm not trying to put the character down. I'm really trying to give this new Q a shot. It's the writers that have been disappointing here.

Maybe McHattie has some issues that prevent him from doing strenuous stuff, and the show didn't have budget for a stunt guy. Lawd knows they didn't seem to have much budget in S2 for consistent makeup or sfx.
Or it could just be another red herring to keep us from ever finding out why they did the switcharoo.

Too true, but I was tolled recently. That Rupert has a stunt double come in and to some of the more difficult moves. I'm not 100% sure, but until other why. I do believe it.
I think it's the red herring bit. Just dropped in there. To smooth over the mistake caused by the writers.

reading the earlier answers he gave in his interview...i'm chalking it up to mchattie being hard to work with....nothing to do with age and such...

Yeah. McHattie was too good an actor. He made everyone else really have to work. To look like they were professional.

Personally I don't mind the whole training thing. It makes sense to me, especially of Vaun is younger. Makes sense that the Ancients would want their men trained by someone who is basically the best fighter on Earth.
The pissineas with the Ancienys... I enjoyed it. But I too found it OOC.

I know there would be changes to the show. Compared to the books, but this new Q has really strayed far form the original material.

It's like, when does the show become "The Strain on FX, inspired by Guillermo Del Toro's novels by the same name"? It's getting close to this point.

Agreed. I just don't get it. And I don't quite understand the excitement of the actors either - the performances delivered this year are just DISMAL and everybody's like "Hey it's so awesome, we had such a great time filming S2, love all my actor buddies!" I feel like asking, "Hey, are you all excited because after shooting you guys go out and drink and hang out and have fun or is it because none of you have any idea how bad your performances truly are?"
(Except for Stephen McHattie who is sitting somewhere drinking tea, being glad he's not part of it any more while making snarky noises)

I think the actors are being bribe to save face. For the show.
There is still half a season left, but the end half will most likely be as bad as this first half has been.
I wouldn't put any bets on season 3 coming. Until I had a date on it. There still plenty of time for the third season to be canceled.

If this whole series has taught me one thing it's not to bet on anything! Sometimes (well, more like at least 1-2 x per day) I'm shocked just how low the bar can go and people still keep throwing money/support at the subject in question.

Re: Rupert Penry-Jones on replacing McHattie
I was thinking it over. season two is not as good as season one. Something that bothers me. Is all the unnecessary sex and fake romance. Dutch and Fet, Palmer and Coco ( witch is really disgusting! ) and Eph and that poor woman whom got killed. In last Sundays episode.
I got the sex in season one. Bolivar's sex party for example. The sex matched the content of the scene. The moment of passion between Nora and Eph. Made more since, because I already know. In earlier episodes. That Eph and Nora were emotionally close and had been intimate in the past.
The sex in season two. Is just bad. It lacks emotional development. Between the characters and the viewer. The building blocks for a good sex scene. As well as romance. I wish there was none of it.
The only random sex. I thing I could handle. Would be with Vaun, Quinlan or both of them together.

I agree, VE. It seems so contrived. There are fewer things more painful to watch than contrived sex/romance.

Re: Rupert Penry-Jones on replacing McHattie
Agreed as well VE! though i also wonder if the pacing has something to do with it as well. The first few episodes of season one were able to balance each character PERFECTLy and their lives. its so strange that now when things are 'technically' more involved, the strain feels less important than it did in season 1.
Also yeah...so much forced romance. Which is frustrating since (for fet/dutch as an example) those two work very well together, but when they add 'love' into it just feels contrived and boring. so little emotional development. :/ i hope when they touch on quinlan and his wife they at least make it somewhat interesting other than 'OH HERE'S MY WIFE.....she's gone now.'

Re: Rupert Penry-Jones on replacing McHattie
If they do that... I don't know what I would do LOL.
Honestly I always felt that the acting lacked? Not to be a jerk but I sometimes wonder why I am a fan... bad acting, plotholes, and the character I came here for is all screwy.
Don't get me wrong... so far I like the new Q. I understand he's not the same as McH, but I've said my piece and nothing is going to change. It's just... this crap is so poorly planned. Even among the other character plot lines.
Not like I could do better but still :p

Baby, I think you COULD do better.
Just because someone is writing in the industry doesn't mean they're good at it!
I am sure you have met people in healthcare who aren't great at their jobs.

This is so true! In healthcare and in the show business.

I know what you mean. The show feels like it's likeable, but not loveable.
